Understand a standard binary contract’s payout, profit and maximum loss. Explore an illustrative calculation with purchase costs and assumed total fees.

What assumptions produce this example?

This hypothetical example uses 100 contracts bought at 40 cents each and $2 in total fees. Purchase cost is $40, total cost is $42, and a $1 settlement per winning contract produces a $100 gross payout and $58 net profit. A zero settlement loses $42. These are illustrative inputs, not live market prices.

At settlement

Total entry cost, including fees $42.00 If your outcome is correct +$58.00 net result after fees

Gross payout: $100.00

If your outcome is incorrect −$42.00 total loss

Gross payout: $0.00

Purchase cost $40.00

Assumed fees $2.00

Break-even probability* 42.0%

*The probability at which expected payout equals total cost under these assumptions. It is not a prediction of the event’s chances.

The formula

Simple inputs.
Clear limits.

How the calculation works

Purchase cost = contracts × price in dollars. Total cost = purchase cost + entered fees. A correct outcome pays $1 per contract; net profit is that payout minus total cost. An incorrect outcome pays $0, so the total cost is lost.

What this tool leaves out

Early sales, changing prices, partial fills, tax, variable outcome-dependent fees, promotional rewards, and special settlement or cancellation rules. Check your actual contract and charges before acting.
